Career Opportunities - Licensed Practical Nurse
General Statement of Duties: Performs nursing service care and treatment to residents on an assigned shift.
Distinguishing features of the class: The work of this class calls for knowledge of and skill in nursing practices and routines where a higher level professional nurse is not required or cannot be secured. A Licensed Practical Nurse provides nursing care and prescribed treatments in accordance with established rules and regulations and professional standards under the supervision of a Registered Nurse. Supervision may be exercised over Nurses Aides.
Examples of work: (Illustrative only)
- Prepares, administers and charts medications and treatments;
- Takes temperatures, pulses, and blood pressures;
- Assists with admission of new residents and acquaints them with new surroundings;
- Helps prepare residents for special treatments and examinations;
- Supervises and assists aides;
- Converses with and checks residents to see that they are comfortable;
- Discusses residents' progress with physicians;
- Explains to residents therapies, medications, and treatments as prescribed by physician;
- Operates and cleans sterilizer and other nursing equipment;
- Makes room checks and answers call lights;
- Assists residents with personal hygiene;
- Assists in passing out food trays and feeding residents;
- Keeps progress reports complete and up-to-date;
- Passes out individual resident medications;
- Attends resident care conferences, staff meetings, and nursing conferences;
- Does related work as required.
- Knowledge of the principles, methods, and standards of nursing;
- Knowledge of health care sanitation, hygiene and medical treatment;
- Ability to apply therapeutic treatments as prescribed;
- Ability to keep accurate records;
- Ability to work harmoniously with physicians, nurses, aides, residents, and the general public;
- Ability to give suitable instructions and assignments to nurses aides and supervise their performance;
- Current registration with the State of Wisconsin as a Licensed Practical Nurse.
Training and Experience: Graduation from a high school and completion of a course of study in practical nursing and prior nursing experience in an institutional setting.
