Career Opportunities - Registered Nurse
General Statement of Duties: Performs professional nursing services in the care and treatment of residents.
Distinguishing features of the class: Work involves responsibility for giving professional nursing treatment and care to residents according to established rules and regulations and standard practices of the profession. Immediate supervision is exercised over the work of subordinate nursing personnel. The employee in this class exercised professional judgment in nursing situations and receives special instructions from the Director of Nursing.
Examples of work: (Illustrative only)
- Administers and records all medications and treatments given;
- Plans, supervises, and evaluates the work of personnel on the shift, assisting and advising when necessary;
- Prepares, applies, and charts the administration of treatments and dressings as prescribed by physicians as well as patient or residents' physical or mental condition;
- Observes symptoms and takes and records temperatures, blood pressures, pulse, and respiration;
- Monitors patient or residents' behavior and vital signs, and discusses with progress with physicians; • maintains accurate records of narcotics, barbiturates, and tranquilizers kept in the Unit;
- Explains to residents therapies, medications, and treatments as prescribed by physicians; • Gives all types of oral, intramuscular, and intravenous injections as ordered; • Notifies families when residents become critically ill; • Assists residents with personal hygiene;
- Keeps patients or residents comfortable and encourages healthful mental attitudes; • Attends staff meetings and nursing conferences;
- Keeps abreast of current developments in the nursing field by professional reading and attendance at in-service training sessions;
- Prepares required records, reports, and statistics;
- Does related work as required.
Qualifications:
- Knowledge of the principles, methods, and standards of professional nursing; • Knowledge of restorative nursing care;
- Knowledge of modem sterilization, diagnostic, and other medical and laboratory procedures, and of bedside nursing methods;
- Ability to work harmoniously with physicians, nurses, attendants, residents, and the general public;
- Ability to give suitable instructions and assignments to nurses aides and supervise their performance;
- Possession of a current license as a Registered Nurse issued by the State of Wisconsin.
Training and Experience: Graduation from an accredited school of nursing and prior nursing experience in a hospital or nursing home.
