- Booster seat is required when the child is at least 4 years old but less than 8 years old, weighs at least 40 lbs but less than 80 lbs, is not 57 inches (4ft 9 inches) or taller.
- Safety belt is required when the child is 8 years old or older or weighs 80 or more pounds or is 57 inches or taller
What Car Seat Should My Child Use
- Infants, until at least a year old and 20 pounds, should be in rear-facing child safety seats.
- Never put a rear-facing infant or convertible safety seat in the front passenger seat of a vehicle with an active passenger air bag. Children over a year old and between 20 and 40 pounds should be in forward-facing child safety seats.
- In addition, children 40 through 80 pounds (about 4 to 8 years old) should be in a booster seat and restrained with a lap/shoulder belt every time they ride in a vehicle.
- Always use a child safety seat and/or safety belt correctly every time you ride. Restrain children ages 12 and under in the back seat.
- Read your child safety seat instruction manual and your motor vehicle owner’s manual for directions.

Travel Tips
- Make a firm rule: EVERYONE rides buckled up or the car does not go. Make NO exceptions for adults or children.
- Agree to carry no more passengers than what you have seat belts for.
- Do not allow sharp or heavy objects to be loose in the car. Anything loose can be deadly in a crash.
- Do not allow a child to have anything like a lollipop or ice cream stick. A bump or swerve could jam the stick down a throat.
- Never try to tend to a crying baby or child while driving. Find a safe place to stop.
- On long trips, a ten minute break at least every two hours will make the trip safer and more pleasant.
- Children have a short attention span. Keep a bag of small, soft toys where you can reach it
