Pertussis (Whooping Cough) Information - 8.9.10
The Kenosha County Health Department is recommending residents protect themselves against pertussis (whooping cough) by receiving the Tdap (Tetanus, Diphtheria, Pertussis) vaccine. This comes as California, Texas, Michigan, Idaho, Ohio, South Carolina, and Oregon are experiencing an outbreak of cases this summer. California has recently seen seven infants die from the disease.
Pertussis is a highly contagious and sometimes fatal bacterial lung infection which has increased alarmingly in the past decade. It spreads from person to person through moisture droplets in the air, usually from coughs or sneezes. Pertussis causes severe coughing spells (which can last four to six weeks or longer) making eating, drinking and breathing difficult. Pertussis can lead to pneumonia, seizures, brain damage and death.
The Kenosha County Health Department is recommending that adults and children 10 years and older who will have close contact with a baby (parents, grandparents under 65 years, siblings, and childcare providers) should receive a single dose of the Tdap Vaccine.
