Environmental Health - Lead
Lead is a highly toxic heavy metal which produces a range of adverse health effects, particularly in young children. Lead dust is of particular concern as it is often undetected and easily absorbed.
Leaded paint used on the interior and exterior of homes was banned in the U.S. in 1978. However, it is estimated that about 75% of homes built before 1978 contain some lead paint.
The CDC recommends testing every child at their one-year check-up, or at six months if the child is high risk. Children in the highest risk category include children 6 to 72 months who live in deteriorated housing built before 1960, who live in pre-1960 housing undergoing renovation; and who are siblings or playmates of children with known lead poisoning.
Disturbing lead paint during remodeling or home repairs can create lead paint dust and debris. Work must be done safely and correctly.
